Lies on the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia, Redang Island rated as among the best island offering way out for those who looking for a free mind, easy life and stay close to nature. Located 45 km from the mainland of Terengganu, the tropical island now gazetted as Marine Park providing various activities ranging from snorkelling, jungle trekking, diving as well to educate the younger generation about the importance of preserving flora and fauna.
Have a timeout on the afternoon when the sun is shining on top of the blue sky. The island showcase why it is so special – the view of its hidden coral, the green, blue, light blue and light yellow colour furnish the sea, mix together with the soft touch of the wind. Good enough for an escape and nature appreciation. If lucky, while walking near the water, a group of small fish with different colours and types will pass around going through various directions. Different from its neighbour, Perhentian Island, Redang considered as more happening and a bit forward with 3star to 4star resort being the dominant. Almost all resort equipped with the infrastructure for water activities and private restaurant for the resident.
At the island, the night sky is beautiful and it is well worth if just spend the whole night looking and observing the star. The Island also contains numbers of mini clubs and beach disco operated by the resort and it open until midnight. Among the best place to hangout during this period is at Pasir Panjang near Laguna Resort as well with other open beach restaurant established along the area. It was started since few years ago Pasir Panjang and Laguna Resort become an attraction among the visitor, as it was view in Hong Kong movie title ‘Summer Holiday’ directed by Jingle Ma with Sammi Cheng, Richie Ren and Chan Hing Cheung as the lead actor of the movie. The replica of ‘More More Tea Inn’ featured in the movie is currently stood beside the resort souvenir shop as part of attraction.
Off in term of tourism value, the island is rich in history. It is well recorded that Redang Island witnessing the WWII era in Malaya as two British warships – HMS Repulse and Prince Of Wales sank here in this crystal water of the sea after being destroyed by the Japanese bomber in 1940’s. The sinking of the two prestigious warships collapsing the British defence system and it mark the start of Japanese colonisation in Malaya.Getting Here
Usually, the common type of transportation to Redang Island is by bus, which takes about 7 hour to arrive in Kuala Terengganu from Putra Bus Station in Kuala Lumpur. From there, take a bus or taxi to Merang Jetty, which take approximate of 45 minute and spend another 50 minute on boat to the island. However, please note that resort in Redang usually provide Land - Jetty – Resort transfer in their package. If travel by airplane, there are airlines such as Berjaya Air operating from Subang Airport in Kuala Lumpur to Redang with just 50 minute onboard but it is quite expensive. The best time to come here is from May to June and the islands normally close during monsoon season.Away & Away Rating
